Rustic Fireplace Refinish

This project in Calgary was a fun little project. The client's family room was dated and sterile, and she wanted something warmer and more rustic. After creating a design that the client loved, I took my client directly to one of our barn board suppliers about 45 minutes away. She hand selected the facing, corner battens and mantel herself and was so excited to be able to do so. The photos tell the story of the transformation.
Bragg Creek Upper Deck

Our client west of beautiful Bragg Creek was concerned about his master bedroom deck, which was cantilevered 8'0 out from the house! Turns out his concerns were warranted, and the structure was completely rotten. After carefully removing the existing deck, poured two columns to support a new post and beam. The new beam and joists were all pressure treated. 30C in the shade meant lots of hydration for the guys, who had no complaints given the majestic surroundings. Cedar 2 x 6 decking finished off the floor on the deck. The two corner posts for the rail were made onsite to match the design of other existing decks. We used 6 x 6 treated and machined them to match. We notched the corner posts out to slide over the corner of the deck joists, which were doubled up to provide more meat to fasten the posts to. The rail was designed to match the existing lower level railings, with the exception of a 2 x 4 bottom rail added around the inside to provide a western rail look. The verticals are 2 x 4 cedar with a 2 x 6 cedar top rail and cap. The bottom side was finished with vented soffit for esthetics. The decking is not waterproof of course, but the soffit will allow rain water to drain while still providing a nicer look from underneath. The old patio paving stones were cut around the deck columns to finish it off on the ground level! Once the job was completed, and our inspector 'Delores' gave us an A+! — in Bragg Creek, Alberta, Canada.
Before & After
This long term renovation project saw the Calgary home transformed from a 1980s cookie cutter box into a stunning home. The exterior portion of the renovation included a new verandah, windows, siding, steps and landscape, paving stone driveway, detached garage, shingles, soffit and facia, rear deck and hot tub. The interior was also renovated throughout with upgraded ornate moldings, doors, custom site stained maple hardwood, African slate floor tile, maple stair railing, a custom laundry area and much more.
